Srinagar : A police officer was killed when soldiers opened fire on a BJP leader's residence in the Newgam area of the city on Thursday, police said.
BJP leader Anwar Ahmad, the party's secretary general in Baramulla and head of Kupwara district, is safe, a police official said.
The official said soldiers shot the BJP leader's post in Arigam Nowgam on the outskirts of the city here this morning.
In the shooting, Constable Rameez Raja was injured and taken to SMHS Hospital in the city where doctors pronounced him dead.

The Medical Superintendent of SMHS Hospital, Dr Nazir Chowdhary, said the officer was "brought dead" to the hospital.
The militants dispersed with an SLR rifle from there.
BJP media chief Manzoor Bhat said the Kashmir party strongly condemned the incident. PTI
