Delhi Traffic Alert: INDIA Bloc March to ECI Triggers Diversions Across Central Delhi

GGS NEWS

NEW DELHI : Security and traffic arrangements were intensified across central Delhi on Tuesday as MPs from the INDIA bloc prepared to march from Parliament towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters. The proposed demonstration is part of the Opposition's campaign over alleged irregularities in electoral-roll revisions and its demand for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory warning commuters that movement could be regulated or diverted from around 8 am in several parts of the New Delhi district. Key stretches expected to be affected include Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, Parliament Street, Patel Chowk-GPO, Windsor Place-GPO, Ashoka Road and Jantar Mantar Road.

Authorities have advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel through the affected areas and allow additional time for their journeys. People travelling through central Delhi have also been encouraged to use the Metro or other public transport wherever possible. Traffic personnel and road signs are expected to guide motorists through alternative routes during the restrictions.

Security has been strengthened around important government buildings and along the proposed march route. Multi-layer barricading and additional police and central security personnel have been deployed in the New Delhi area as authorities prepare for the demonstration. Reports said around 4,000 Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel were deployed across the district.

The Opposition has been protesting over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. INDIA bloc leaders have raised questions about changes to electoral procedures and alleged discrepancies in voter lists. They are seeking greater transparency from the Election Commission and have demanded the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

The Election Commission and the ruling BJP have rejected allegations of wrongdoing. The poll panel has defended the electoral-roll revision exercise, while the Opposition has continued to challenge aspects of the process. The dispute has become a major political issue, with demonstrations taking place in Delhi and other parts of the country.

The planned march comes after several days of protests in the national capital. Police have imposed restrictions on gatherings in parts of New Delhi, and previous demonstrations linked to the issue have resulted in detentions and criminal cases. Authorities have also increased surveillance and security around protest locations to prevent clashes and maintain public order.

For residents and commuters, the immediate impact is expected to be traffic congestion and delays around central Delhi. Connaught Place and Parliament Street are among the areas likely to experience significant movement restrictions because of barricading and the passage of protesters.

Police have urged the public to follow instructions from traffic personnel and avoid restricted areas wherever possible. Commuters heading towards government offices, commercial areas and transport hubs in central Delhi have been advised to plan their routes in advance.

The INDIA bloc's march is expected to add to the political pressure surrounding the Election Commission and the ongoing debate over electoral-roll revisions. The Opposition has described the demonstration as part of a broader campaign to raise concerns about electoral transparency and accountability.

Meanwhile, authorities remain focused on maintaining security around the Parliament complex and the ECI headquarters while managing the movement of protesters and regular traffic.

The situation is expected to remain closely watched as the march progresses, with police prepared to regulate movement and respond to any law-and-order issues. For commuters, officials have advised caution, patience and the use of public transport during the period of heightened restrictions.
