Baishakhi or ‘Vaisakhi’, is a traditional harvest festival that is celebrated with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm across the country, mainly in north India. It marks the beginning of the Sikh new year. On this auspicious day, farmers offer their prayers and thank God for a bountiful harvest of the Rabi crop. The festival also signifies the founding of the Khalsa Panth community which was set up by the Guru Gobind Sikh – tenth guru of the Sikhs.
How is Baisakhi celebrated?
Baisakhi is celebrated with a lot of joy, gusto and merriment by the people of the Sikh community. On this day, the gurudwaras are decorated and a special puja is organised for the especial occasion. A procession called Nagar Keertan is also performed which is led by five Khalsa who represent the Panj Pyare. On the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi, people generally wear yellow cloths as they signify the spirit of rebirth and sacrifice of the Panj Pyare. They are also a symbol of joy and celebration. Sikhs also hold kirtans bathe in lakes or rivers before visiting local Gurdwaras before taking part in this festival.

Facts of about the harvest festival
Baisakhi is celebrated on April 13, a day after the famous Christian festival ‘Easter’.
In Hinduism, Baisakhi, which marks the first day of the month of Baisakha, celebrates the Solar new year, based on the Vikram Samvat calendar.
It is believed that on Baisakhi, Ranjit Singh was proclaimed as Maharaja of the Sikh Empire.
The infamous Jallianwala Bagh massacre also happened on the day of Baisakhi.

Some Hindus, also believe that Baisakhi marks the start of their traditional solar new year, a harvest festival which is an occasion to bathe in sacred rivers such as Ganges and meet friends and take part in other festivities.
Baisakhi also coincides with other festivals such as Pohela Boishakh, Bohag Bihu, Vishu, Puthandu among others.
