Mumbai : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally responded to the controversy surrounding reports that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), owned by Kaviya Maran, had signed Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed. The speculation triggered a heated debate on social media, with many questioning whether a Pakistani player could be associated with an Indian Premier League franchise.
The rumours began circulating after several online posts and unverified reports claimed that SRH had entered into an agreement with Abrar Ahmed. The news quickly went viral, leading to confusion among cricket fans and raising questions about the rules governing player participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In response, the BCCI issued a clarification stating that the reports were misleading and not accurate. According to board officials, no Pakistani player is currently part of any IPL franchise, including Sunrisers Hyderabad. The governing body reiterated that the IPL player pool only includes cricketers who are eligible under existing regulations and are registered for the official auction or replacement draft.
The BCCI also emphasized that since the early seasons of the IPL, Pakistani players have not participated in the tournament due to political and diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan. Although players from Pakistan were part of the inaugural IPL season in 2008, they have not been included in the league since then.
Sources close to the board suggested that the viral reports may have stemmed from confusion over franchise activities in other leagues around the world. Many IPL team owners operate or invest in teams across multiple T20 competitions globally, which sometimes leads to misunderstandings about player signings.
Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad has not made any official announcement regarding Abrar Ahmed. The franchise has remained silent on the matter, allowing the BCCI’s statement to address the speculation.
Abrar Ahmed, a talented leg-spinner for Pakistan, has gained international attention for his impressive performances in international cricket. Known for his mystery spin and ability to trouble top batters, the young cricketer has been seen as one of Pakistan’s promising bowling talents in recent years. However, there has been no confirmation of any association between him and an IPL franchise.
The controversy once again highlights how quickly misinformation can spread on social media, especially when it involves high-profile leagues like the IPL and well-known team owners such as Kaviya Maran.
Cricket analysts say the situation underscores the importance of relying on official announcements from governing bodies like the BCCI before believing or sharing such reports. The board’s clarification appears to have put an end to the speculation for now.
With the IPL continuing to attract global attention and some of the world’s best cricketers, discussions around player eligibility and international participation remain a sensitive topic. For the moment, however, the BCCI has made it clear that no Pakistani cricketer, including Abrar Ahmed, is part of Sunrisers Hyderabad or any other IPL franchise.
