New Delhi / Raipur : The crackdown left 22 security personnel killed, led by about 400 Maoists around jawans from three sides in a green area and loaded LMGs and used IEDs to launch late-night attacks, officials said.

The Maoists took their dead, estimated to be 10-12, in tractor-operated trailers and also reduced some complex arms.

Authorities say it has been discovered that the Naxals are carrying out an act of armed combat in Jagargunda-Jongaguda-Tarrem and that troops have been identified to prevent them.

The Maoists, however, dragged the troops into a three-sided trap with a powerful gun, adding. Even the paramedics were unable to stay in the shelter until 2pm on Saturday as the blaze continued. The choppers could only stay at 5pm to pick up the injured, officials said.

“The Maoists dragged the ambush with heavy artillery and surrounded the guards on three sides. A powerful gun has emerged in the deforested forest at the moment, ”said the chief executive. Security personnel hid in large trees and continued firing until the bullets ran out, he added.

Elsewhere, he added, the bodies of seven soldiers were found and tree trunks were loaded with bullets, indicating that there was a powerful gun in the area.

About 20 weapons and weapons of mass destruction were also looted by Naxals as security officials said a search was under way and details were being seized. - TNS / PTI
