Washington : On Thursday U.S. President Joe Biden allowed the visa ban on foreign workers, especially H-1B, to end as a notice issued by his predecessor Donald Trump expired, a move that could benefit thousands of Indian IT professionals.

During the national closure and the COVID-19 disaster, Trump in June last year issued a proclamation suspending US entry for several temporary or "foreign" category applicants, including H-1B, claiming that these visas posed a risk to the US labor market during recovery. of the economy.

On December 31, Trump extended the law on March 31, 2021, noting that the extension was confirmed because the epidemic continued to disrupt American lives, and high levels of unemployment and unemployment were presenting significant economic challenges for workers throughout the United States.

Biden did not issue a new announcement that the ban on H-1B visas continued after March 31.

He has promised to lift his suspension on H-1B visas, saying Trump's immigration policies are cruel.

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to hire foreign workers for special jobs that require technical expertise. Technology companies rely on it to employ tens of thousands of workers each year from countries such as India and China.

The expiration of Trump's proclamation will now lead to the issuance of H-1B visas by U.S. embassies overseas which could lead to American companies bringing in highly skilled technical experts within the country.

No new announcement was issued by Biden until midnight Wednesday, leading to the final ban on the issuance of new H-1B visas.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House would not renew the ban on H-1B and other work visas imposed last year in response to the COVID-19 epidemic, which is expected to end on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a Republican Senator from Missouri on Wednesday urged Biden to issue a new proclamation to continue banning H-1B visas.

"I am writing today to urge you to extend the temporary suspension of foreign workers to the United States, which, without intervention, will end today," Senator Josh Hawley wrote in a letter to Biden.

"The president's announcement to suspend the introduction of temporary workers in the US has protected Americans suffering from the economic crisis caused by the epidemic. With millions of struggling Americans unemployed - and millions more in need of money - now is not the time to open the floodgates of thousands of foreign workers competing with American workers for scarce jobs and services, ”he wrote.
