Delhi : On Friday the government said India was a disease, not a climate change promoter and that continental Europe and the United States had been the largest carbon exporters in the past two days.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday shared details of historic carbon emissions by major regions and nations between 1751 and 2017 and said the European Continent had contributed 514 billion tons of total carbon emissions during this period, accounting for 33 percent of the total carbon burden .

“I have details from 1751 to 2017. The European continent has contributed 33 percent - 514 billion tons - of historical output during this period. The United States has contributed 25 percent, or 400 billion tons; China has donated more than 13 percent, reaching 200 billion tons while India has donated only 48 billion tons. Our net production is much lower than in these regions and we are not at all responsible for climate change, ”Javadekar said in response to questions from the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

The minister is adamant that India is a disease, not a cause of climate change.

“We are the victims of this disease. That is why our position is that developed countries should reduce their carbon emissions, and transfer technology at lower cost to developing countries to help them further reduce their emissions, ”said Javadekar, adding that not all major environmental events are due to climate change.

He was referring to the recent floods in Chamoli and forest fires.

“All such natural phenomena are not related to or caused by climate change alone. These events are historic and in more than 100 to 1,000 years we are seeing a recurrence of such events, ”he said.

The minister informed the house that the government had set up an effective forest fire alarm system that helped prevent major disasters even in difficult areas.

Javadekar also said that plans and provinces have been set up to reduce pollution in India's top 100 cities over the next five years. He also swore to the AAP-led Delhi government to take credit for the gradual reduction of pollution in the capital, recognizing that the reduction was a result of the actions taken by the Institute.

"But some people like to rush into debt," he said.
