Kanpur: Gangster Vikas Dubey, the main accused in the Kanpur encounter case, has been arrested at a police station in Ujjain, according to Uttar Pradesh government sources. The dreaded gangster is the main accused in the killing of eight policemen in Kanpur’s Bikru village under the jurisdiction of Chaubepur Police Station in Uttar Pradesh. A police team had gone to arrest Dubey, who has over 60 cases registered against him when the gangster and his accomplices opened fire at it from rooftops in the early hours of Friday last week. He was on the run since then.

Ashish Singh, Ujjain Collector, said, "Vikas Dubey was going to Ujjain Mahakal temple when he was identified by security personnel. Police were informed, he confessed his identity after being pushed for it. He has been apprehended by police and interrogation is underway."

Over 40 teams and a Special Task Force (STF) were commissioned to nab the notorious criminal. In separate encounters, police shot dead five of his associates including Amar Dubey, Prabhat Misra and Bahua Dubey. Prabhat was arrested in Faridabad by the Haryana Police on Wednesday. He was shot dead after he tried to flee from custody while being brought to Kanpur from Faridabad on transit remand on Thursday morning. Bahua was killed in Etawah in a separate encounter.


On Wednesday, the gangster was spotted at a hotel in Faridabad for the first time after the failed police encounter in Kanpur. Police had increased the bounty to catch him from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh in the last six days.

Chaubeypur station officer Vinay Tiwari and another policeman were arrested on Wednesday on charges of leaking information about the police raid to the gangster. In a separate FIR, the two sub-inspectors have also been booked for fleeing the site of the encounter.
