Super cyclone Amphan to weaken into 'extremely severe storm' as it inches closer to West Bengal



Odisha : The extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan has now turned into a super cyclonic storm and is spiralling towards Indian shores, prompting the West Bengal and Odisha governments to start evacuating people from vulnerable areas.

The super cyclonic storm is only the second over the Bay of Bengal in two decades. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 37 teams in the coastal areas of Bengal and Odisha. Amphan is expected to make landfall on West Bengal coast on May 20 as an extremely severe cyclonic storm.

10.30 am: Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba will chair a meeting of the National Crisis Monitoring Committee at 12 noon today. Apart from the readiness of NDRF and defence forces, power and telecommunications departments have been directed to be ready with emergency response.

10.18 am: Tripura govt asks districts to be prepared.

9.57 am: IMD on Tuesday morning said Amphan is very likely to weaken into an extremely severe cyclonic storm during the next six hours.

"It is very likely to move north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans during the afternoon/evening of May 20 as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 155-165 kmph gusting to 180 kmph," the weather department said.

9.30 am: As of 5.30 am on Tuesday, Amphan lay over west-central Bay of Bengal about 520 km nearly south of Paradip, Odisha: IMD

7.55 am: Super cyclone Amphan moves at 14 kmph: IMD

In its bulletin on Tuesday, IMD said the super cyclonic storm Amphan over West-central and adjoining East-central Bay of Bengal moved nearly north-northeastwards with a speed of 14 kmph during past six hours.

At 2.30 am on May 19, Amphan lay over Westcentral Bay of Bengal about 570 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 720 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 840 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).

7.50 am: Squally wind speed reaching 55 to 65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph extend to along and off north Odisha coast from the morning of May 19 and along and off West Bengal coast from afternoon: IMD.

7.45 am: ‘Orange message’ for West Bengal, Odisha coasts. IMD has warned of extensive damage in Kolkata, Hooghly, Howrah, South and North 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts.
