NEW DELHI : India on Tuesday recorded a jump in its COVID-19 tally to 70,756, including 46,008 active cases, 22,454 cured or discharged, and 2,293 deaths, according to the latest update by the Union Health Ministry.
In the last 24-hours, India reported 1,979 new active cases and 87 deaths.
Out of the 87 deaths, Maharashtra reported 36 deaths, Gujarat 20, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan reported six deaths each.
West Bengal reported 5 deaths. Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana reported one death each.

Of the 2,293 fatalities, Maharashtra tops the tally with 868 fatalities, Gujarat is second with 513 deaths, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 221, West Bengal at 190, Rajasthan at 113, Uttar Pradesh at 80, Delhi at 73, Tamil Nadu at 53 and Andhra Pradesh at 45.
Karnataka and Punjab have recorded 31 deaths each.
Telangana has reported 30 fatalities due to coronavirus, Haryana has registered 11, Jammu and Kashmir 10, Bihar 6 and Kerala 4.
Jharkhand and Odisha have recorded three COVID-19 fatalities each. Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Chandigarh have reported two deaths each.
Meghalaya and Uttarakhand have reported one death each, according to the ministry data.
According to the ministry's website, more than 70 per cent of the deaths are due to comorbidities.
According to the health ministry data updated in the morning, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country is from Maharashtra at 23,401 followed by Gujarat at 8,541, Tamil Nadu at 8,002, Delhi at 7,233, Rajasthan at 3,988, Madhya Pradesh at 3,785, and Uttar Pradesh at 3,573.

Andhra Pradesh has 2,018 COVID-19 cases, West Bengal 2,063 and Punjab 1,877.
Telangana has 1,275 cases, Jammu and Kashmir 879, Karnataka 862, Haryana 730 and Bihar 747.
Kerala has reported 519 coronavirus cases so far, while Odisha has recorded 414 cases. A total of 174 people have been infected with the virus in Chandigarh and 160 in Jharkhand.
Tripura has reported 152 cases, Uttarakhand 68, Assam 65, Chhattisgarh 59, Himachal Pradesh 59 and Ladakh 42.
