Covid19 : Pakistan PM Seeks Debt Relief for Developing Nations to Fight Virus
Islamabad : Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has appealed to the international community and world bodies to "launch an initiative to give debt relief to developing countries" to help in their fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic.
In a video message on Twitter, Pakistan PM said that "highly indebted countries" are facing a "lack of fiscal space" that was inhibiting their efforts to prevent the coronavirus from spreading and, at the same time, providing relief to people.
"My appeal to the international community, the UNSG & international financial institutions to respond positively to the dilemma confronting developing countries in the face of the COVID19 pandemic, (sic)" he tweeted.
Emphasising on the need of the global support, Khan said, coronavirus pandemic had brought unprecedented economic and health challenges in developing nations.

Khan entrusted the Foreign Minister and Adviser on Finance to reach out to their respective counterparts for "Global Initiative on Debt Relief" that will bring together leaders from different countries "notably from the Paris Club, Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) and heads of international organisations" to push for a more coordinated response to the pandemic.

Imran Khan invited the UN Secretary-General to work with him in advancing the objectives of a coordinated response. "The proposed Global Initiative aims to lay the ground for urgent debt relief to the developing countries, at their request, and without onerous conditionalities, he said.
Pakistan Covid-19 tally mounts to 5,230
The total number of positive cases of coronavirus in Pakistan has reached 5,230 with 2,464 cases in Punjab, 1,411 in Sindh, 744 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 230 in Balochistan, 224 in Gilgit-Baltistan, 119 in Islamabad, and 40 in PoK.
The pandemic has claimed the lives of 91 persons so far, while at least 1,100 coronavirus patients have been discharged after recovering from the disease.

Last month, the Asian Development Bank pledged $350m to Pakistan to help in country's fight against Covid-19 and to address the socio-economic disruption associated with it.

"Developing countries like Pakistan cannot afford to announce huge economic packages [to mitigate the impact of the crisis. Countries like the United States and Japan have announced economic packages worth trillions of dollars whereas Pakistan could only announce a package of $8 billion," he said.
