NEW DELHI : Conngress leader Rahul Gandhi is addressing the media on the ongoing coronavirus crisis. Gandhi says, "In no way does a lockdown defeat the virus, it can only stop it for a while and the biggest weapon to fight it is testing. Lockdown is like a push button, it is not a solution. Once we and come out, the virus will spread again, lockdown allows time to ramp up preparedness. Our testing rate is 199 per million of the population, this is not enough. We need to increase testing, to pre-empt the virus movement."


Lucknow's Sadar Bazar area most sensitive: Joint CP

Lucknow Joint Commissioner Naveen Arora visits Sadar area in Lucknow, which has been identified as a hotspot. Arora said, "It has become the most sensitive zone of Lucknow, positive cases increased to 60. It had started with 12 people, who were Jamaatis. People didn't practice social distancing here and violated lockdown."

Govt speaks to airline CEOs, to issue guidelines on cancellation, refunds soon

Ministry Of Civil Aviation summoned all private airlines CEOs regarding advance ticket bookings during the lockdown period and the refund policy. All CEOs had attended the meeting with MoCA senior officials through virtual platform. Government is forming guidelines to facilitate air travellers with their booking issues and refund discrepancies they are facing. The government will come out with the guidelines regarding this very soon.

Coronavirus cases cross 3000-mark in Maharashtra

Maharashtra has reported 165 new coronavirus cases, taking the total tally in state to 3081. Mumbai alone has reported 107 of these new cases.

9 Tablighi Jamaat members test positive for corona in Pakistan

At least nine Tableeghi Jamaat activists have been tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Pakistan's Punjab province, taking the total infections to 6,506 in the country, according to a media report on Thursday.

A pizza delivery boy in Delhi has tested positive for coronavirus. 72 families in south Delhi, where he delivered food in the past few weeks, have been put under home quarantine.

Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs has said, "Rapid Antibody Testing Kits (first lot of 3 lakh from Guangzhou Wondfo and 2.5 lakh from Zhuhai Livzon) and RNA Extraction Kits (1 lakh from MGI Shenzhen) got custom clearance on Wednesday night. The kits are on way to reach India. In total, 6.5 lakh kits are on the way and these should reach today. Our embassy in Beijing and consulate in Guangzhou played a key role in this."


Karnataka reports 13th coronavirus death

“A 66-year-old man from Bengaluru, who had tested positive for coronavirus, died today. He was referred from a private hospital to the hospital he was currently admitted at and was on ventilator support since April 10. This is the 13th Covid-19-related death in the state,” said the Karnataka health dept.

Allow payment for insurance renewal till May 15: Govt

The government has asked insurance companies to allow policyholders to make payments till May 15 for pending renewals. “With a view to mitigate hardship to policyholders whose health and motor (3rd party) insurance policies are due for renewal during lockdown, the government has issued a notification allowing policyholders to make payments on or before May 15 towards renewal of their policies,” announced Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Pakistan records over 6,300 cases

Pakistan's coronavirus cases rose to more than 6,300 on Wednesday, as a top minister said it is a "difficult situation" for the government which is fighting war at different fronts including COVID-19, poverty, hunger and weak economy.

China dispatches over 6.5 lakh testing kits for India

India death toll at 414, total cases over 12,300

According to the latest Health Ministry data, India has a total of 12,380 confirmed coronavirus cases with the death toll now at 414. There are 10,477 active cases in the country while 1,488 people have been cured or discharged after treatment, said the Health Ministry on Thursday morning.

South Korea reports 22 new Covid-19 cases

South Korea has confirmed 22 more cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, raising the country's total tally to 10,613 with 229 deaths. The new cases recorded Thursday means that South Korea's daily increase in virus infections has been below 30 for the fourth consecutive day.

Global toll crosses 1,36,000, over 20 lakh infected

Over 1,36,000 have died across the world due to coronavirus infection, reported the Johns Hopkins University tally. US has reported over 28,000 deaths followed by Italy with over 21,000 deaths.

Nearly 2600 people die in US in 24 hours

The United States has recorded nearly 2,600 deaths due to coronavirus in the past 24 hours, setting a new record, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. This takes the total coronavirus death toll in the US to over 28,000. A running tally from Johns Hopkins showed 2,569 victims at 8:30 pm Eastern Time (0030 GMT Thursday), compared with the same time the previous evening, bringing the total number of US deaths to 28,326 -- higher than any other nation. Globally, over 1,36,000 people have died of the virus.

Nearly 12,000 infected in India, death toll close to 400

The total number of coronavirus cases in India is about to cross the 12,000-mark and the death toll is inching towards 400. The health ministry has reported 392 deaths till Wednesday, the latest figures for Thursday morning are awaited. Maharashtra has reported the most number of cases where nearly 3,000 people are infected. Death toll in Maharashtra is also the highest. 

Maharashtra is followed by Delhi, which has reported over 1,500 cases but still has half the number of cases compared to Maharashtra. The number of active Covid-19 cases stood in India is 10,197 while the Centre said as many as 1,343 people have been cured and discharged. Of the total 392 deaths, Maharashtra has the highest toll with 178 fatalities, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 53.

Delhi and Gujarat have reported 30 deaths each and Telangana has seen 18 deaths. Punjab has reported 13 deaths, Tamil Nadu 12 while Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka have reported 11 deaths each. According to ICMR data, India has tested 2,44,893 people so far while experts insist these numbers need to go up at a faster pace and India must ramp up tests across the country.
