According to officials, Punjab is currently in a stable power position, with adequate generation and procurement arrangements in place. The utility stated that the state has been successfully managing peak demand periods and has not faced any significant deficit. Authorities emphasized that claims of a widespread power crisis are “misleading” and do not reflect the actual ground reality.

Despite these assurances, consumers paint a different picture. Many residents have reported power cuts lasting several hours, particularly during peak evening times. In rural regions, farmers have complained about disruptions in electricity supply affecting irrigation schedules, raising concerns about potential impacts on crop productivity. Small business owners, meanwhile, say that inconsistent power is hurting operations and increasing reliance on costly backup options like generators.

Officials have attributed these outages to “localized technical faults,” maintenance work, and load management issues rather than a shortage of electricity. They explained that infrastructure constraints, such as overloaded transformers and aging distribution systems, can sometimes lead to temporary disruptions. Efforts are reportedly underway to upgrade infrastructure and improve supply reliability in affected areas.

The utility also highlighted that Punjab has been purchasing additional power from external sources to ensure uninterrupted supply during high-demand periods. With summer approaching, authorities claim to have put contingency plans in place, including round-the-clock monitoring and rapid response teams to address faults quickly.

Energy experts note that while Punjab may not be facing a generation shortage, distribution challenges often create a gap between official claims and consumer experience. They stress the need for long-term investment in grid modernization, better load forecasting, and improved maintenance practices to minimize outages.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have criticized the government’s handling of the situation, accusing it of downplaying public grievances. They argue that the rising number of complaints indicates deeper systemic issues that require urgent attention.
