Fresh Snow and Rain End Prolonged Dry Weather in Himachal

Shimla : After weeks of dry weather, several parts of Himachal Pradesh received fresh snowfall and rainfall, bringing much-needed relief to farmers and helping improve water availability across the hill state. The change in weather also led to a noticeable drop in temperatures across higher and mid-hill regions.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate snowfall was recorded in higher reaches including Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur, and parts of Chamba. Popular tourist destinations such as Manali and nearby high-altitude areas also witnessed fresh snowfall, attracting tourists eager to experience winter conditions.

Rainfall was reported in several districts including Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, and Mandi. The precipitation ended a prolonged dry spell that had raised concerns among farmers and horticulturists, particularly apple growers who depend on winter moisture and snowfall for healthy crop cycles.

Weather experts say the snowfall and rain were triggered by an active western disturbance moving across the Himalayan region. These weather systems typically bring winter precipitation to northern parts of India, especially the Himalayan states.

Agriculture experts believe the precipitation will benefit rabi crops such as wheat and barley in many parts of the state. The rainfall has also improved soil moisture levels, which had declined due to the prolonged dry conditions earlier this season. Horticulture growers have also welcomed the snowfall, as it helps maintain the chilling hours necessary for apple orchards to produce good yields in the upcoming season.

However, the fresh snowfall also caused minor disruptions in higher altitude areas. Authorities reported that some roads connecting remote villages in Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur were temporarily blocked due to snow accumulation. Local administrations deployed snow clearance teams to restore connectivity and advised travelers to exercise caution while driving in mountainous regions.

The tourism sector, on the other hand, has welcomed the snowfall. Destinations like Manali and Shimla are expected to witness a surge in tourist arrivals over the coming days as visitors flock to enjoy the snow-covered landscapes.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast partly cloudy conditions in the coming days, with the possibility of isolated light rain or snowfall in higher reaches. Officials have advised residents and tourists to remain updated on weather advisories, especially in areas prone to landslides or snow accumulation.

With the latest spell of rain and snowfall, Himachal Pradesh has finally received relief from the extended dry phase, offering a boost to agriculture, water resources, and the tourism industry alike.
