Bangkok : ( AMRIT SIDHU) The Government of India has confirmed that 778 Indian nationals are currently onboard 28 ships operating in the Persian Gulf, amid rising security concerns in the region. The update comes at a time when tensions in the wider West Asia region have escalated due to ongoing hostilities and attacks on commercial shipping routes.

According to officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Directorate General of Shipping, the government is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant contact with Indian seafarers and shipping companies operating in the area. Authorities said all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety and security of Indian crew members working aboard these vessels.

The Persian Gulf is one of the most strategically important maritime routes in the world, handling a large portion of global oil shipments. Ships passing through the region often travel via the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but crucial waterway connecting the gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply moves through this passage, making it highly sensitive to geopolitical tensions.

In recent days, security concerns have intensified following attacks on commercial vessels and tanker routes in the region. Several countries have issued advisories to ships operating in and around the gulf, urging heightened vigilance and coordination with naval forces deployed in the area. The developments have also raised concerns among families of seafarers and shipping companies whose crews operate in the high-risk zone.

Indian authorities said they are maintaining a real-time watch over the movement of ships carrying Indian crew members. The Ministry of External Affairs has also been coordinating with Indian missions in nearby countries to provide assistance if required. Officials added that maritime agencies and shipping companies have been asked to ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and to remain in contact with naval security networks.

India is one of the largest suppliers of skilled seafarers to the global maritime industry, with thousands of Indian sailors serving on merchant vessels across the world. Many of them work on oil tankers, cargo ships and container vessels that frequently pass through the Persian Gulf due to its importance in global energy trade.

Experts say that although shipping operations are continuing, the volatile security situation has forced companies to take additional precautions. Some vessels have reportedly altered their routes, increased onboard security measures and coordinated more closely with international naval patrols operating in the region.

The government has assured that it remains fully prepared to respond if the situation deteriorates. Officials said that safeguarding Indian citizens working overseas remains a top priority, and any necessary diplomatic or logistical support will be provided.

As tensions persist in West Asia, authorities continue to monitor developments closely while staying in touch with Indian seafarers to ensure their safety and well-being. The government has urged calm among families of the crew members and emphasized that all appropriate measures are being taken to address the evolving situation.
