Shimla welcomes season’s first snowfall as dry spell finally breaks

GGS NEWS

Shimla Shimla witnessed the season’s first snowfall on Tuesday, bringing much-awaited relief from a prolonged dry spell and marking the official arrival of winter in the hill town. The snowfall, which began in the early morning hours, covered rooftops, roads, and surrounding hills in a pristine white blanket, delighting residents and tourists alike.

The fresh snowfall ended weeks of dry weather that had raised concerns among apple growers and the tourism industry. According to the Meteorological Department, the snowfall was triggered by a western disturbance affecting the western Himalayan region. Several areas in and around Shimla, including Kufri, Narkanda, and Mashobra, also reported light to moderate snowfall, while lower regions experienced rainfall.

Temperatures dropped sharply following the snowfall, with the minimum temperature in Shimla falling below freezing point for the first time this season. Officials said the mercury is expected to dip further over the next few days, intensifying cold conditions across Himachal Pradesh. The weather department has forecast intermittent snowfall in higher reaches and rain in mid and lower hills over the next 24 to 48 hours.

The snowfall brought cheer to tourists, many of whom had been waiting for the first snow experience of the season. Popular tourist spots such as the Ridge, Mall Road, and Jakhoo Hill saw a surge in visitors early in the day, with people clicking photographs and enjoying the winter scenery. Hoteliers reported an uptick in bookings following the snowfall, raising hopes for a strong winter tourism season.

However, the sudden change in weather also caused temporary disruptions. Slippery roads and reduced visibility led to traffic slowdowns on several routes, including the Shimla–Kufri road. The local administration advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and urged drivers to use snow chains in higher areas. Municipal authorities deployed machinery to clear snow from key roads to ensure smooth movement.

For farmers and orchardists, the snowfall is considered beneficial, as it is expected to improve soil moisture levels and support apple crops during the dormant phase. Experts said adequate snowfall is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and replenishing water sources in the region.

Meanwhile, power supply was briefly affected in some areas due to snow-laden trees and strong winds, though officials said restoration work was carried out promptly. Schools in certain high-altitude areas remained closed as a precautionary measure.

The state disaster management authority said it is closely monitoring the situation and has advised residents to remain alert, especially in snow-prone regions. Tourists have been asked to check weather updates before planning travel.

As Shimla embraces its first snow of the season, the hill town once again showcased its winter charm, offering a scenic spectacle while signaling the onset of colder days ahead.
