Sector 32 Pharmacy Firing: Two Accused Shot, Arrested After Chandigarh Encounter

GGS NEWS

Chandigarh : Chandigarh Police on Tuesday arrested two accused shooters after a brief encounter in connection with the recent firing incident at a pharmacy in Sector 32, officials said. Both suspects sustained injuries during the exchange of fire and were taken into custody, bringing a swift breakthrough in a case that had sparked concern over public safety in the city.

According to police sources, the encounter took place during a late-night operation launched after investigators received specific inputs about the movement of the accused. A special team tracked the suspects to the outskirts of the city and attempted to intercept them. When police personnel signalled the suspects to stop, they allegedly opened fire in an attempt to escape, prompting the police to retaliate.

“In self-defence, the police team fired back, injuring both accused. They were immediately overpowered and arrested,” a senior police officer said. The injured suspects were rushed to a nearby hospital under tight security and are reported to be out of danger. Doctors confirmed that both are undergoing treatment and will be produced before a court once declared fit.

The arrested men are believed to be directly involved in the firing incident at a pharmacy in Sector 32 earlier this week. During that incident, the assailants allegedly opened fire, causing panic in the busy market area. While no fatalities were reported, the firing left residents and shopkeepers shaken and led to heightened police patrolling in several sectors.

Police officials said preliminary investigations suggest the firing was linked to a personal rivalry and extortion-related motives, though all angles are being examined. “We are questioning the accused to establish the exact motive behind the attack and to identify whether more people were involved,” the officer added.

Weapons suspected to have been used in the pharmacy firing were also recovered from the accused during the operation, police said. Forensic teams have been roped in to match the recovered arms with ballistic evidence collected from the crime scene in Sector 32. CCTV footage from nearby areas is also being analysed to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the attack.

The successful arrest has been welcomed by local residents, who had been demanding quick action after the incident. “Such firing incidents create fear among traders and customers. We are relieved that the police acted promptly,” said a shopkeeper from Sector 32.

Chandigarh Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in violent crimes. Senior officials also said that security measures would continue to be intensified in sensitive areas to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.

Further investigation is underway, and police are expected to make more disclosures after the interrogation of the accused is completed.
