Chandigarh  Widespread rainfall across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and adjoining areas brought much-needed relief from rising temperatures on Tuesday, as several regions witnessed a noticeable drop in the mercury. The showers, triggered by changing weather conditions and a western disturbance, ended a brief warm spell and ushered in cooler, more pleasant conditions across north India.

Chandigarh and its surrounding areas received moderate rainfall during the day, leading to a sharp fall in daytime temperatures. Residents welcomed the change, as overcast skies and cool winds replaced the humid conditions that had prevailed over the past few days. Similar weather was reported from Mohali and Panchkula, where intermittent rain continued into the evening hours.

In Punjab, districts including Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala and Bathinda recorded light to moderate rainfall. The showers helped cool down both urban and rural areas, offering respite to people who had been experiencing fluctuating temperatures. Farmers also expressed relief, as the rainfall is expected to improve soil moisture levels, particularly benefiting rabi crops and vegetables.

Haryana, too, saw rainfall in several parts, including Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra and Karnal. Weather officials said the rain contributed to a decline in maximum temperatures by two to four degrees Celsius in many locations. The cooler conditions are likely to persist for the next 24 to 48 hours, according to forecasts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the rainfall to an active western disturbance influencing the region. Meteorologists said cloud cover and light winds helped prevent temperatures from rising sharply during the day. The IMD has predicted the possibility of more light rain or drizzle in isolated areas, along with partly cloudy skies in the coming days.

While the rainfall brought relief, it also caused minor disruptions in some places. Traffic slowed in urban centers due to waterlogging at a few low-lying spots, especially during peak hours. Authorities advised commuters to drive cautiously on wet roads. However, no major incidents were reported.

Health experts said the drop in temperatures could help reduce heat-related discomfort, but advised people to remain cautious of sudden weather changes, especially the elderly and children. Residents were also advised to keep track of weather updates as conditions remain variable.

For the agriculture sector, the rainfall is largely being seen as beneficial. Experts noted that timely rain during this period helps maintain soil moisture and supports crop health. However, they cautioned farmers to remain alert in case of further weather fluctuations.

Overall, the rainfall across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and nearby areas marked a welcome shift in weather patterns, bringing cooler temperatures and relief to millions. With more mild weather expected, residents can look forward to a brief spell of pleasant conditions before seasonal changes set in fully.
