New Delhi : Delhi experienced its coldest morning in nearly two years on Wednesday as the minimum temperature plunged to 4.2 degrees Celsius, sending a sharp chill across the national capital. The mercury drop marked a significant dip compared to seasonal averages and intensified winter conditions across the city and adjoining regions of the National Capital Region (NCR).

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature was several degrees below normal for this time of year, driven by cold northwesterly winds and clear night skies that allowed rapid heat loss. Meteorologists said the absence of cloud cover and calm winds overnight contributed to the sharp fall in temperatures, resulting in biting cold during the early morning hours.

Residents across Delhi woke up to dense fog and icy winds, with visibility levels dropping in several parts of the city, including Palam, Safdarjung, and parts of east and north Delhi. The cold conditions disrupted daily routines, forcing commuters, morning walkers, and street vendors to bundle up in heavy woollens. Shelters and night homes reported a rise in the number of homeless people seeking refuge from the extreme cold.

The cold wave conditions also affected road and rail traffic. Fog-related delays were reported at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, while several long-distance trains arrived late due to low visibility on railway tracks in northern India. Traffic police issued advisories urging motorists to drive cautiously, especially during early morning hours.

In response to the worsening cold, the Delhi government stepped up measures to protect vulnerable populations. Temporary night shelters were kept open for extended hours, and additional blankets were distributed among homeless communities. Officials said mobile medical units were also deployed to check on people living in the open.

The cold spell extended beyond Delhi, with neighbouring states such as Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh also experiencing a sharp dip in temperatures. Several cities in the region reported near-freezing conditions, intensifying cold wave alerts issued by the IMD.

Health experts have advised residents, especially the elderly and children, to take precautions against prolonged exposure to cold. Doctors warned that extreme cold could aggravate respiratory illnesses, joint pain, and cardiovascular conditions. People were urged to stay indoors during early morning and late-night hours and to ensure adequate heating and hydration.

The IMD has forecast that cold conditions are likely to persist over the next few days, with no significant rise in minimum temperatures expected immediately. Dense fog is also likely to continue during morning hours, potentially impacting visibility and travel.

As winter tightens its grip, Delhi residents are bracing for more frigid mornings ahead, with weather experts advising preparedness as the cold wave shows little sign of easing in the near term.
