LUDHIANA : The Punjab government has extended the closure of all schools across the state till January 13 in view of the continuing severe cold wave and dense fog, officials said on Monday. The decision comes as large parts of north India, including Punjab, continue to reel under harsh winter conditions that have disrupted daily life, transport, and visibility on roads.
According to the state education department, the extension applies to all government, aided and private schools, covering classes from pre-primary to senior secondary level. Authorities said the move was taken to ensure the safety and health of students, especially young children, as temperatures remain unusually low and foggy conditions persist during morning hours.
Punjab has been witnessing near-freezing temperatures, with several districts reporting minimum temperatures below the seasonal average. Dense fog has also been reported across major cities and highways, leading to poor visibility during early mornings and late evenings. Train and road traffic have been affected at several places, while flight operations have faced intermittent delays due to low visibility.
Meteorological officials have warned that the cold wave is likely to continue over the next few days, with no immediate relief in sight. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued advisories urging people to take precautions against cold-related illnesses, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
Education Minister officials said that while online learning options may be used by some schools during the extended closure, no strict mandate has been issued, leaving it to individual institutions to decide based on feasibility and student access. Parents have largely welcomed the decision, saying it prioritizes student safety during extreme weather.
“This extension is necessary as children are especially vulnerable during such weather conditions. Morning fog and cold temperatures increase the risk of illness and accidents,” an education department official said.
The winter break had already been extended earlier this month as cold conditions intensified across the state. With schools remaining closed, district administrations have also been asked to monitor weather conditions closely and remain prepared to take further steps if temperatures drop further or fog worsens.
Meanwhile, the state government has advised residents to limit early morning travel, use warm clothing, and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities. Farmers have also been cautioned about possible impacts of cold and frost on crops, particularly vegetables and horticultural produce.
Transport authorities have urged drivers to maintain low speeds, use fog lights, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak fog hours. Health departments across districts have been instructed to remain alert and ensure adequate arrangements at hospitals and primary health centres for cold-related ailments.
The situation in Punjab mirrors conditions across several north Indian states, where winter cold and fog have disrupted normal routines. For now, students and parents in Punjab can expect schools to remain shut till January 13, with authorities indicating that further decisions will be taken based on prevailing weather conditions.
The government is expected to review the situation closer to the reopening date and issue fresh directions if required.
