Cold Wave Alert: Punjab Extends School Holidays Until January 7

(GGS NEWS)

Ludhiana : The Punjab government has extended winter holidays for all schools across the state until January 7 in view of the prevailing cold wave and plunging temperatures. The decision has been taken to safeguard the health of students, especially young children, as weather conditions continue to remain harsh in several districts.

An official order issued by the School Education Department stated that the extension applies to all government, aided, and private schools. Earlier, schools were scheduled to reopen after the initial winter break, but persistent cold weather, dense fog, and low visibility prompted authorities to review the situation and extend the holidays.

Over the past few days, Punjab has been witnessing severely low minimum temperatures, with several districts recording temperatures close to the freezing point. Dense fog during early morning hours has also disrupted road, rail, and air traffic, raising safety concerns for students commuting to schools. Health experts have warned that prolonged exposure to extreme cold can lead to respiratory infections, hypothermia, and other cold-related illnesses, particularly among children.

Officials said the decision was taken after assessing weather forecasts issued by the Meteorological Department, which predict that cold wave conditions are likely to persist in the coming days. “The safety and well-being of students is our top priority. Keeping schools closed during extreme weather conditions is a preventive measure,” a senior education department official said.

Parents across the state have largely welcomed the move, expressing relief over the extension. Many had raised concerns about children having to leave home early in the morning amid dense fog and biting cold. “Young children are especially vulnerable in this weather. The government’s decision will help protect their health,” said a parent from Ludhiana.

However, some parents of senior students expressed concern over the impact on the academic calendar, particularly with examinations approaching. School authorities have assured that academic schedules will be adjusted, and necessary measures will be taken to ensure that syllabus coverage and assessments are not adversely affected. Some private schools are also exploring options such as online revision sessions or adjusted timetables once schools reopen.

Meanwhile, district administrations have been instructed to remain alert and take necessary steps to protect vulnerable sections of society, including children, the elderly, and the homeless, from the cold. Night shelters and community centers are being monitored to ensure adequate arrangements during the cold wave.

The Meteorological Department has advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during early morning and late-night hours and to take precautions against cold-related ailments. Dense fog is also expected to continue, affecting visibility on highways and rural roads.

Schools in Punjab are now expected to reopen on January 8, subject to a review of weather conditions. Authorities have indicated that further decisions will be taken if the cold wave intensifies.

As winter tightens its grip on northern India, Punjab joins several other states that have either extended school holidays or modified school timings to cope with extreme weather, underscoring growing concerns over student safety during harsh winter conditions.
