Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case: CJI-led SC bench to hear suo motu case today

New Delhi : The Supreme Court will hear a suo motu case related to the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The apex court also set aside a 2023 Calcutta High Court verdict in which it acquitted an accused in a sexual assault case and made "objectionable" observations advising adolescent girls to "control sexual urges". The court also restored the conviction of the man who was acquitted by the High Court for raping a minor girl with whom he had a ‘romantic affair’.

The Delhi Medical Association has moved the Supreme Court, seeking to be made a party in a suo motu case related to the rape and murder of the trainee medic.

Protests are being witnessed across the country over the incident which has severely affected healthcare services.

The medic's body with severe injury marks was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital's chest department on August 9. A civic volunteer was arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the case the following day.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
