Presidential Election Results 2022: Counting of votes begins; All eyes on Draupadi Murmu |
New Delhi : Counting of votes for the 16th presidential election began at the Parliament House Room number 63 here on Thursday with the ruling NDA combine candidate Droupadi Murmu pitched to win big against her opposition challenger Yashwant Sinha.
The votes of MLAs will be counted first followed by the votes of MPs.
Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody, returning officer for the election, said results would be out as soon as the counting concluded.
Murmu will take oath on July 25 with the incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind's term ending on July 24.
In all 31 polled ballot boxes are there -- one which was located at Parliament House Room 63 on the day of the election and 30 boxes that were located at the state headquarters and have been brought to Delhi by air or road amid tight security.
Thirty polled ballot boxes brought from states will be opened first.
Voting trends on election day including cross voting in Murmu's favour indicated a clear, comfortable edge for the 64 year old former Jharkhand governor and a weak wicket for 84 year old Sinha.
The BJP is expecting Murmu will cross the two third mark in the electoral college of 10, 86, 431 votes.
Prime MInister Narendra Modi, in anticipation of Murmu's victory, is slated to meet her at 4 PM today.
The total voting turnout in the presidential election on July 18 was 99.12 pc with 4754 electors out of 4796 eligible (elected MPs and MLAs) casting their ballot.

Out of 4025 MLAs eligible to vote in the presidential election 2022, 3991 voted.
Out of 763 MPs who were eligible, 771 voted and eight were absent.
Although the 2022 presidential election was the 16th, it will send India's 15th president to the highest constitutional office. Dr Rajendra Prasad, India's first President had served two terms.
Murmu once elected will not only be the first tribal president of India, and the first leader from the east to hold the highest office but also the first president to be born after Independence.
Murmu was born on June 20, 1958. All previous presidents were born before Independence.
Murmu will also be the youngest in India’s history to hold the highest office once elected
