As cases rise, report says monkeypox may slow down but not be eliminated
New Delhi : The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Saturday asked countries to enhance surveillance for monkeypox and isolate confirmed patients, saying it expected cases to rise.
Less severe than cousin smallpox
- Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox but less severe, say experts
- The virus has been found close to tropical rainforests in 11 African nations
- Spreads via contact with bodily fluids, lesions on skin, respiratory droplets
The Symptoms
- Rash with blisters on skin
- Fever, muscle ache, low energy
The Prevention
- Avoid skin-to-skin/close contact with patient
- Clean hands, objects and surfaces touched regularly
An outbreak of monkeypox continues to happen in countries that do not typically have cases, with the WHO saying, “This can be concerning.” It warned 200 confirmed cases in countries where the disease was not an endemic could just be the beginning.
