New Delhi : The winter session of Parliament commencing on Monday witnessed its first face-off with the opposition leaders demanding a debate on the Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021, and the government insistent on passing the bill quickly.

“The Modi government wants to push through the three farm laws repeal Bill in Parliament on Monday without any debate. The passage of the laws 16 months ago was most undemocratic. The manner of repeal is even more so. The Opposition demands a discussion before the repeal,”

Congress chief whip in Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh said.

The government is learnt to be eager to pass the bills without debate on grounds that discussions on the issue have been held for months and the passage was critical as announced by Modi on Gurparb Day.

The opposition leaders are now gearing for a confrontation in the Lok Sabha should the government push the bills without seeking to discuss related issues.

Congress MPs, meanwhile, have also moved adjournment motions in the Lok Sabha demanding farm laws repeal and a law on MSP.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi led a protest at Parliament on farmers’ issues.

Rahul Gandhi and other Congress MPs also protested.
