Wellington : New Zealand on Thursday suspended the entry of all travelers from India, including its citizens, for about two weeks following a high number of cases of coronavirus arriving from a South Asian country.
The move comes after New Zealand recorded 23 new cases of coronavirus at its border on Thursday, 17 from India.
"We are temporarily suspending the entry into New Zealand for travelers from India," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told a news conference in Auckland.
India is battling the second deadly wave of COVID-19 with daily infections this week surpassing the high number of first waves seen last September.

The suspension will begin at 1600 local times on April 11 and will run until April 28. During this time the government will look at disaster risk management measures to keep pace.
"I want to emphasize that while the COVID arrivals from India are pushing for this initiative, we are looking at how we treat high-risk travel areas. This is not a disaster risk assessment in the country ...," Ardern said.
New Zealand has eradicated the virus within its borders, and has not reported any public transmission in the area for about 40 days.
But it was reviewing its border arrangements as more people with the disease arrived in New Zealand recently, most of them from India.
Ardern said the rollout rate for good cases has been rising and hitting seven cases on Wednesday, the highest number since last October.
New Zealand on Thursday also reported one new case of infection in an employee who was employed at a coronavirus management center. The 24-year-old was about to be vaccinated. Reuters
