Gwalior : Twelve women and a man were killed after an auto-rickshaw collided with a bus traveling in the Old Chawni area of ​​Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday morning, police said.


The accident happened around 5.30am when the women, who were cooks at 'angwadi kendra' in the Stone Park area under the Old Chawni Ganga Malanpur area, were returning home after work, said Gwalior collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh.


While eight women and an auto-rickshaw driver died on the spot, others were injured in their injuries at the hospital, said SP Amit Sanghi of the district.



The occupants of the bus escaped unharmed, a senior official said, adding that the bus driver fled as he left the trapped vehicle behind.


The bus was on its way to Morena from Gwalior.

The collector said the women were supposed to be traveling in two rickshaws after finishing cooking in Anganwadi, but as one of them had a last-minute stumbling block, they had to travel in one auto-rickshaw, which involved an accident.



"We are investigating the accident and the exact cause," the official said.


Madhya Pradesh Energy Minister Pradyumna Singh Tomar arrived at the scene shortly after the accident.



No injuries were reported to bus passengers, he said.


The victims were residents of Gole ka Mandir and Jaderua in the Gwalior area.



Meanwhile, the Gwalior regional transport official, MPS Chouhan, has been suspended by the state government, the official said.


Expressing grief, Madhya Pradesh Prime Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that less than Rs 4 lakh each of the relatives of the victims.



Rajya Sabha MP Jyotiraditya Scindia of the BJP and Congress of Madhya Pradesh president Kamal Nath offered condolences.


The deceased were identified as Rachna Rathore (34), Sarita Rathore (37), Anita (37), Asha Rathore (45), Rajendri (40), Usha Jatav (37) Usha (45), Maya Devi (65), Harbobai Munni Pal ( 55), Guddi (40), Laksmi (27) and Dharmendra Parihar (35), a motorist, said senior police officer Pankaj Pande. PTI
