Sydney : Australian authorities plan to evacuate another thousand people Monday from flood-hit areas west of Sydney, which is expected to have the worst flooding in 60 years and expected heavy rains in the next few days.

The incessant rains for the past three days have flooded rivers in Australia's most populous region of New South Wales (NSW), causing extensive damage and causing calls for evacuations.

"We have to be strong, it will be a very difficult week," NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters.

Heavy rains lashed large parts of NSW in stark contrast to weather conditions in similar regions last year, when authorities battled drought and massive tree fires.

"I do not know of any time in the history of a country where we have experienced these extreme weather conditions very quickly during the epidemic," Berejiklian said.

Sydney on Sunday recorded a rainy day with about 111 mm (4.4 inches) of rainfall, while some regions along the northern coast of NSW received nearly 900 mm of rain in the past six days, more than three times the average march, government details have been shown.

Authorities say about 18,000 people have been evacuated from the state.

Large parts of the east coast of the country will be hit by heavy rains from Monday due to a combination of low-lying tropical northwestern Australia and a coastal boat from NSW, said Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) chief Jane Golding.

"We expect the heavy rains to fall in areas that have not seen much rain in the last few days. We expect flood hazards in those areas as well," Golding told reporters.

Some areas in the western region of Sydney have seen severe flooding since 1961, authorities said, as they expected wild weather to continue until Wednesday.

Extreme flood warnings have been issued in large parts of NSW and neighboring Queensland. Reuters
