Ludhiana : Ludhiana, which has assumed the dubious distinction of the Covid capital of Punjab, with maximum number of infections and deaths in the state, has geared up for undertaking the massive vaccination drive against the virus. Frontline health workers will be covered in the first phase, the registration for which has begun in the district.
Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said here today that the Covid vaccine was likely to reach this month-end or in the first week of January, following which the registered frontline workforce would be vaccinated.
He said private health workers and medical practitioners, willing to get vaccinated, could get themselves registered online or at the Civil Surgeon office.
“Only registered persons will be administered the vaccine in the first go and no on-the-spot cases will be considered,” he clarified.

Sharma said persons aged over 50 years would be covered in the second phase while those below 50 years and comorbid patients would be administered the vaccine in the third phase.
Patting the back of the district health, police, and civil official machinery for working tirelessly to successfully control the spread of the possible second wave of the virus, the DC cautioned residents against letting the guard down, and continue wearing mask, maintaining social distancing, and strictly adhering to the night curfew between 10 pm and 5 am, besides fresh restrictions on social gatherings imposed by the state government.
Recently, Punjab Chief Secretary Vini Mahajan had also said the state was all set for a mega Covid vaccine rollout and all requisite protocols were being put in place to identify and vaccinate people, depending upon their risk and other factors, prioritising healthcare and frontline workers.
She had said the state official machinery was fully geared up and all necessary arrangements were put in place to ensure smooth undertaking of such a large-scale vaccination drive in the state.
Mahajan had directed Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to take up the testing momentum above the present 30,000-mark daily besides ensuring a strict 24-hour deadline for test results, to minimise the impact of any possible second Covid wave in the state.
She had also asked the DCs to strictly enforce the fresh restrictions imposed on social gatherings and not to let the guards down in the state.
Continue to take precautions, residents told
