Ludhiana : Despite farmer unions giving a call for two-hour complete “chakka jam” across the state against lathi charge on protesting farmers in Haryana, the farmers staging a protest at the Ladhowal toll barrier ended the road block midway to clear the way for ambulances stuck in the traffic jam on the Ludhiana-Jalandhar highway.

 

Amarik Singh, leader of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Jalandhar), said farmers had been on a dharna at the Ladhowal toll barrier for the past over three days. However, vehicular movement was not stopped rather all commuters were allowed to pass through the barrier without paying toll fee.

“As per the plan of all farmer unions across the state, a two-hour road block was to be carried out across Punjab today. The moment we started out protest at the Ladhowal toll barrier around 12.15 pm, there was a massive traffic jam on the highway. Ambulances and other emergency vehicles got stuck in the jam. Going the humanitarian way, we immediately decided to lift the road block and all vehicles were allowed to pass,” said Amarik.

He, however, said their routine protest would continue at the toll barrier and commuters would not pay toll fee.
