Hyderabad : Seven people died in a devastating fire that broke out at 5 am on Sunday in a hotel being used as a COVID-19 isolation centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada.

According to officials, one person was charred to death, while others died due to suffocation. A National Disaster Response Force team brought the dead bodies out of the hotel wearing PPE kits and other safety equipment.

There were around 40 people inside the hotel, out of which 30 were COVID-19 patient‌s and 10 hospital staff.

While fifteen patients were rescued using fire tenders, nearly 17 others were brought to safety using ladders. They have been shifted to a hospital with similar isolation facilities.

Two employees, including security guard Krishna Reddy, jumped from the first and second floors to save themselves.

According to Commissioner of Police, Vijayawada, B Sreenivasulu, the incident took place at Hotel Swarna Palace, which is being used as the COVID-19 centre. He said the fire has since been contained.

The fire broke out near the reception, possibly due to a short circuit and later spread to the first and second floor. The hotel is located in the centre of the city.

Chief Minister YS Jagan expressed shock over the accident. Officials at the chief minister’s office said a private hospital had leased the hotel. A preliminary investigation revealed that it had placed patients infected with coronavirus.

The CM directed officials to take immediate steps to ensure better medical services to the victims. An inquiry has been ordered and the chief minister has sought a report immediately.
