Geneva : More than 2.12 lakh new coronavirus cases were reported across the world in the last 24 hours, the highest-single day spike, said the World Health Organisation.

The UN health body said that there have been 212,326 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, a record high since the pandemic began.

Countries that saw the biggest spike are the United States, Brazil and India, according to a daily report of the WHO.

According to WHO, the previous highest single-day jump in global COVID-19 cases was registered on June 28 when 1,89,077 new infections were reported worldwide.

The total number of coronavirus cases worldwide has climbed to over 1.1 crore or 11 million, according to the latest data by the Johns Hopkins University on Sunday. The number of deaths due to the virus currently stands at 5.28 lakh.

The United States remains the worst-affected country by the virus with over 28 lakh cases, followed by Brazil. Russia has the third-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world and is being closely trailed by India.

India saw record surge in COVID-19 cases

Meanwhile, India reported the highest-single day spike of over 23,000 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours on Saturday, pushing the coronavirus count to 6.4 lakh.

Of the total cases, 3,94,226 have been successfully treated while one case has been migrated from the country. There are 2,35,433 active cases of COVID-19 in India and all are under medical supervision.

The death toll increased to 18,655  in the country with 442 more persons succumbing to the viral infection in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state by the coronavirus outbreak in the country with COVID-19 tally jumping to 1,92,990 and death toll jumping to 8,376, according to the Union Health Ministry. Delhi has the third-highest number of COVID-19 cases with 94,695 infections while Tamil Nadu is placed at the second spot having reported over one lakh cases.
