NEW DELHI : With 9,887 fresh cases, the Covid-19 tally in India on Saturday rose to 236,657 with as many as 6,642 fatalities, according to latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Delhi Chief Minister today said that a couple of private hospitals in Delhi are refusing admission to patients and demanding lakhs of rupees for allotting bed to those in a pressing need. He warned of strong action against such “black-marketing of beds”.
Contrary to fears, gradual relaxations in the lockdown over the past month have not triggered a major surge in the novel coronavirus infections in the country. The transmission rate, or the number of people getting infected by an already infected person, has been going down steadily — and is now the lowest since it began to be calculated early in the outbreak.
On the global front, over 6,700,000 people have been infected. While the death toll stood at 394,875, as many as 2,746,192 people have recovered so far.

Covid-19 not 'exploded' in India but risk remains: WHO expert
The coronavirus disease has not "exploded" in India, but the risk of that happening remains as the country moves towards unlocking its nationwide lockdown, according to a top WHO expert. WHO Health Emergencies Programme Executive Director Michael Ryan on Friday said the doubling time of the coronavirus cases in India is about three weeks at this stage. "In South Asia, not just in India but in Bangladesh and...in Pakistan, other countries in South Asia, with large dense populations, the disease has not exploded. But there is always the risk of that happening," Ryan was quoted as saying by PTI in Geneva.

Those black-marketing beds will not be spared: Delhi CM
Kejriwal added: "We launched a mobile App to stop the black marketing of beds. We thought of making the information about number of beds and ventilators in hospitals transparent. There was uproar over it as if we committed a crime. Some hospitals are denying admission to coronavirus patients. I am warning those who think they will be able to do black-marketing of beds using the influence of their protectors from other parties, you will not be spared."

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal addresses media
Addressing the media, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said: There are ample number of clinics for testing but I urge you not to go till absolutely required. The number of testing carried out in Delhi is far greater than the remaining states. Our priority is to save lives. It is better for asymptomatic patients to visit flu clinics for testing. The ones who are serious and face breathing issues will need to be saved first. Delhi has a population of around two crore. If everyone comes for testing, we will fall short of hands. Testing asymptomatic ones will stall the treatment of others."

India coronavirus numbers explained: Cases on rise, but growth rate is slowing
On Friday, more than 9,500 new cases were detected throughout the country.
It might appear a little counter-intuitive. The number of new cases of novel Coronavirus in the country is going up almost every day. Between May 15 and May 20, about 4,000 to 5,000 cases were being discovered every day. For the last three days, between 9,000 and 10,000 new cases are being detected. And yet, the national growth rate has slowed down by more than half a percentage point during this time.
Again, novel Coronavirus cases in more than 25 states and union territories have been growing at a rate which is more than the national growth rate, and yet the national growth rate has been showing a declining trend for the last two weeks.

‘No benefits’: Oxford stops enrollment for HCQ arm
Even as the World Health Organisation restarted the hydroxychloroquine arm of the Solidarity Trial, investigators in the Recovery Trial at the University of Oxford have announced that they would stop enrolment for the HCQ arm as no benefits have been found of the drug. India continues use the drug for prophylaxis and treatment of COVID19. All eyes will now be on the Solidarity Trial. Peter Horby, Professor of Emerging Infectious Diseases and Global Health in the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford and Chief Investigator of the Trial said: “Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have received a lot of attention and have been used very widely to treat COVID patients despite the absence of any good evidence. The RECOVERY trial has shown that hydroxychloroquine is not an effective treatment in patients hospitalised with COVID- 19. Although it is disappointing that this treatment has been shown to be ineffective, it does allow us to focus care and research on more promising drugs.”

Explained: The gender gap in job losses
India imposed one of the strictest lockdowns in the world to contain the spread of Covid-19. This resulted in a near-complete shutdown of all economic activity in April 2020, with gradual and partial lifting of restrictions throughout the month of May. Globally, it is expected that in the Covid-19 pandemic, women are likely to be more vulnerable to losing their jobs compared to men. A research note from Citibank estimates that there are 220 million women employed in sectors that are potentially vulnerable to job cuts: of the 44 million workers in vulnerable sectors globally, 31 million women face potential job cuts, compared to 13 million men.

ICMR study: Hamster reactions to Covid-19 similar to humans
Hamsters present similar reactions to Covid-19 as humans, with the highest quantity of the virus in the beginning of the infection and its complete removal by three weeks, a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has shown. Mice, however, did not show any susceptibility to the virus. Mice and hamsters are used in medical research as they have a biological makeup similar to humans, besides being low-cost and having the ability to reproduce swiftly. Researchers from ICMR institutions studied the responses of 16 mice and 18 hamsters to a novel cononavirus (SARS-CoV-2) sample from an infected person. The rodents did not show any clinical signs or mortality from the virus. The study also found that the transmission of the virus was the most on the third and fifth day, mirroring evidence that human cases are the most infectious in the early stages.

Coronavirus India News Live Updates:
Mumbai, the city that accounts for 20 per cent of all novel Coronavirus infections in India, has come under scrutiny for its stagnating testing numbers. The city has been testing around 4,000 samples every day and this number has not increased for over a month now.
This, despite the fact that it has the capacity to carry out about 10,000 tests per day, and the number of positive cases that it discovers each day has been on a steady rise.
The debate on testing has been going on since the outbreak started in India in the beginning of March. The conventional wisdom is that the more tests are carried out, the more are the chances of finding positive patients. Read here
That is because a majority of the infected people, more than 80 per cent, are expected to be asymptomatic, meaning they do not show any signs of the COVID-19 disease they are carrying. But they are capable of transmitting the virus to others.
Only if they are tested, can they be identified and isolated. That is why health experts have been stressing on the need to ramp up testing infrastructure, and test more and more people, even asymptomatic ones.
The testing numbers have steadily improved in the last two months. India is now testing more than one lakh samples every day. Almost every state, including Maharashtra, has significantly increased its testing numbers during this time. Mumbai, however, has bucked this trend in the last one month at least.

Meanwhile, Beijing on Friday decided to lower its Covid-19 emergency response, marking the return of normalcy in China’s capital following the coronavirus outbreak, while the central city of Wuhan, the origin point of the pandemic, cleared all its confirmed cases.
Wuhan recorded zero cases of the virus following testing of 10 million people.
Beijing city will lower its emergency response to the novel coronavirus epidemic from the second level to the third level starting Saturday, a local official announced on Friday.
Explained: Social bubbles — micro-communities that could contain spread of Covid-19
Amid the pandemic, there is increasing pressure on governments to ease lockdown restrictions, especially to lift economic and psychological burdens on people who have been confined to their homes worldwide. Many countries have started gradually lifting restrictions even as the number of cases of the infection continues to rise. As a Covid-19 vaccine is still months away, questions about the methods that can be adopted to avoid the second wave of infections while easing restrictions have arisen.
A new study published in Nature Human Behaviour suggests that one of the ways of effective social distancing strategies to keep the Covid-19 curve flat include the idea of social bubbles. “…simple behavioural rules can go a long way in keeping the curve flat,” the study says.
