NEW DELHI : The Covid-19 count crossed 40,000 cases in the country with fresh infections hitting another new high on Sunday, the third in as many days, as Delhi (427 new infections), Gujarat (374), Punjab (330), Tamil Nadu (266), Haryana (66) and J&K (35) reported their highest jump in cases in a single day.
Worryingly, the number of cases has surged significantly on the last three days of the second phase of lockdown, just before restrictions in many parts of the country are set to be eased. New cases on Sunday spiked to 2,667, breaking Saturday’s record of 2,564, even as the worst-hit state, Maharashtra, continued to report a dip in cases.
The state recorded 678 new cases, down from 790 on the previous day, and significantly less than the peak of 1,008 on Friday. The country has now recorded 42,456 Covid cases, of which 11,442 have recovered and 1,390 have died, according to the latest data collated from state governments.

Cong to bear cost of rail travel of migrant workers: Sonia Congress President Sonia Gandhi said its state units will bear the cost of rail travel of needy migrant workers and labourers stranded at their workplaces due to the coronavirus-With its tally reaching 73 cases, Faridabad has overtaken Gurgaon, which has reported 72 cases, as the worst-hit district in Haryana.

Three persons died due to Covid-19 in Rajasthan taking state’s toll to 71 while 114 others were tested positive for the disease the state on Sunday taking the state’s Covid-19 tally to 2886. Gujarat, the second worst-affected state in the country, recorded 374 new cases and 28 deaths, both highest in a single day for the state. Of this, Ahmedabad alone reported 274 new cases and 23 deaths. The state’s total tally has now reached 5,428 and its death toll is 290.
Tamil Nadu is another state where a sharp spike was seen in cases. The southern state recorded 266 new cases taking its tally to 3,023. Andhra Pradesh reported 58 new cases on Sunday, taking the tally to 1583.In Telangana, 21 new cases of Covid- 19 were recorded taking the overall tally in the state to 1,082.

It was a day of relief for Kerala as no positive case was reported in the state. Till date, 499 positive cases have been reported in the state, of which 401 people have been discharged. Overall, more than 11000 people have recovered in the country which nearly 26% of the total number of persons affected by the disease.
Jammu and Kashmir recorded 35 fresh cases of Covid-19 taking its tally to 701. The number of Covid-19 cases in Bihar has now reached 517 with 36 more people, including two cancer patients, testing positive for the disease.
