Maharashtra : Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to take custody of the Wadhwans after their quarantine period ends today. Taking to Twitter, Deshmukh addressed the media via live streaming and informed that their quarantine will end at 2 pm today and requested the CBI to take their custody. He also added that until they are handed over to the CBI or ED, they will remain safely in the custody of the state government.

"The Wadhawans will be safe and secure in our custody. Nobody will be allowed to flee to London. When the CBI approaches us we shall hand them over for further investigations," the Minister said. 23 members of the Wadhawan family, including Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan, were placed under institutional quarantine by the local police in Mahabaleshwar after they violated the lockdown rules. They were taken into custody on April 9 in Mahabaleshwar and shunted to quarantine in a Panchgani facility.

However, the Wadhawans had claimed that they were escaping from the spread of coronavirus and decided to shift from a rented accommodation in Khandala to their ancestral home in Mahabaleshwar. Following the controversy, IPS officer Amitabh Gupta who allegedly gave permission to the Wadhawan family of DHFL Group to travel, was sent on compulsory leave until completion of the probe in the matter.
