NEW DELHI : The number of coronavirus infections continues to rise worldwide, with more than 1,015,877 people diagnosed so far, and death toll surpassing 53,220. India, more than 2,500 people have been infected and 72 have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University on Friday.

The coronavirus pandemic cases soared to 2,567 in India, with Mumbai's Dharavi reporting its third Covid-19 case today. At 416, Maharashtra has seen the highest number of coronavirus positive cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (309), Rajasthan (140).


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged India's 1.3 billion citizens to switch off the lights at their homes, stand at their doorsteps, and light candles and diyas at 9 pm on Sunday for nine minutes, in a symbolic attempt to dispel the darkness of the coronavirus pandemic and give hope, especially to the poor, who are the most impacted by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Coronavirus world update: Over 245,193 are infected in the US till now, with 6,088 dead. Italy has 115,242 confirmed cases an 13,915 Covid-related deaths. Death toll in Spain has also crossed the 10,000-mark and the country has 112,065 positive cases.

Coronavirus pandemic: Restrictions tightened in Kashmir in view of Friday prayers
Restrictions on the movement and assembly of people in Kashmir to contain the spread of coronavirus were tightened on Friday in view of congregational prayers, officials said.

The congregational prayers were not held at most mosques of the valley last Friday as various religious organisations appealed the people to offer prayers at home.

Main roads in the valley have been sealed off and barriers erected at several places by security forces to check the unwanted movement of the people and to enforce the lockdown on Friday, the officials said.

Coronavirus worldwide update: Global virus cases top a million, deaths surpass 50,000
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases around the world has soared past one million and deaths have topped 50,000 as the United States reported the highest daily death toll of any country so far.

Despite more than half the planet living in some form of lockdown, the virus is continuing to spread rapidly, and to claim lives at an alarming pace, with the US, Spain and Britain all seeing their worst days yet.

Coronavirus India update: ICMR recommends antibody test for speedy detection of COVID-19 cases
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in its interim advisory has recommended the use of the rapid antibody test in the country's coronavirus hotspots. The decision for the recommendation was taken at an emergency meeting of the National Task Force, formed to deal with the health crisis, held on Thursday.

"Population in hotspot areas may be tested using rapid antibody test. Antibody positives to be confirmed by RT-PCR (reverse transcription-PCR) using throat/nasal swab, and antibody negatives to be quarantined at home," the ICMR said in its interim advisory. READ ON...
