New Delhi | Hanuman Jayanti is festival that is observed with a lot of gusto and zest to celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman – one of the many incarnations of Lord Shiva. According to the Hindu calendar, Hanuman Jayanti falls on Chaitra Purnima and this time it will be celebrated on April 8, Wednesday.
Lord Hanuman, who was an incarnation of Lord Shiva, was an absolute devotee of Lord Rama. According to legends, he was born to Anjana -- the wife of Vanaraja Kesari (the King of Monkeys). It is believed that Anjana was cursed by Muni Vishwamitra for disturbing him. He cursed Anjana and said that she will give birth to monkey in her next month.

Anjana then worshipped Lord Shiva to seek his blessings and get rid of the curse. She urged Shiva to be a part of her son. It is believed that Pawan Dev (Wind God) saw Anjana once and mated her following which Lord Hanuma was born and that is why he is also known as ‘Pawan Putra’.
Another legend says that King Dasharatha was performing the ritual of Putrakameshti yagna in order to have children following which he received some scared payasam. However, a kite snatched a fragment of it and the Pawan Dev gave it to Anjana, following which Lord Hanuman was born.
How is Lord Hanuman worshipped?
Worshipping Lord Hanuman on this day will help people seek his blessings and help them face all the problems of the life bravely. To worship Lord Hanuman, people wake up early in the day, take bath and perform puja and arti and sing devotional songs. People also recite Hanuman Chalisa as it is believed that Lord Hanuman can easily ease all the sufferings of one’s life. Various kinds of foods, sweets and flowers are also offered to Lord Hanuman and distributed to his followers as Prasad.
Timings to worship Lord Hanuman:
The Purnima Tithi will begin at 12.07 pm on April 7 and will end at 8.04 am on April 8.
